Writing - Q2 Week 5 Day 2

Today, students took the theme statement from yesterday and plugged it into the box of the "boxes and bullets" essay outline.

Then we talked about how the claim can lend itself toward the topic sentences of the essay so students could add that to the outline. For example, the claim "The theme of Red Kayak is 'the truth is always the best choice'" implies a few things - there is a choice about telling the truth (good v. bad), and that there is something being hidden or not spoken about. So, the outline might start to look like:

The theme of Red Kayak is "the truth is always the best choice". (in the box at the top of the outline)
⟹ The main character, Brady, learns a secret.
